New Google Algorithm Reinforces What We've Said All Along

We've been telling our clients for years that fresh, original content is the surest way to get Google to find your site. That's about to become even more true.

Google's system for how it matches searchers with the right site is a closely-guarded secret. Many people make their living by trying to figure out exactly how this process works, because getting the right advice can make the difference between success and failure for a web-based business. Last week, Google rewrote its parameters for how sites are placed in search results, sending businesses and consultants scrambling to make sense of the new rules. They estimate that the new algorithm will affect the outcome of as much as 35% of user searches.

When Dorey Design Group builds a website for our clients, we put a great deal of effort into making the site architecture and coding work with Google's page rank system. So things like proper URLs and the speed at which the page loads are things we build into every site. But we also give our clients our best advice on the content they'll need to create for the site, and increasingly, this is the most important part of Google's search algorithm. While Google doesn't disclose precisely what they look at when "crawling" a site, one thing they do say is that the new algorithm will place significantly more weight on newer, fresher content.

For years, we've been urging our clients to invest the time and resources necessary to create original, interesting and changing content on their sites. That idea has always been at the heart of how Google ranks a website. Apparently this advice is going to become more important than ever.
